Cohousing is a type of intentional community in which we residents actively participate in the design and management of our own neighborhood.
Typically, cohousing communities consist of private homes and/or apartments clustered around a common area, where residents gather for shared meals, socializing, and other activities.
Cohousing promotes social connections, reducing isolation, while still providing essential privacy and personal space. Most cohousing communities also incorporate sustainable features, such as resource-efficient buildings, renewable energy systems, and sustainable landscaping, allowing us to reduce our environmental impact without giving up convenience.
Cohousing developments employ thoughtful architectural design and intentional social engagement to create a strong sense of community, engaging shared spaces, mutual support, and cooperative decision-making. All residents have a say in decisions affecting the community, including the design of common spaces, private houses, and amenities, the use of common resources, and the planning of shared activities and events.

Why we love cohousing & why you will, too!
Ownership with Community
In cohousing, unlike in communes or co-living, households usually own their own living space. Each unit is a place to create an individual or family nest that is private. Together, we will share community spaces like a common house, gardens, and other amenities and we still benefit from the accrued value of home ownership.
Sense of Community: Cohousing is created by the group, which forges a strong sense of belonging and connection among neighbors. We can rely on each other for support and connection, we can share resources, and we can work together to make decisions about our community. Everyone has a stake in the game, and no one is alone. Someone is always home.
Social Opportunities: Cohousing communities create shared spaces where we can gather for meals, activities, and events. The concentrated design makes it easy for both gregarious and introverted people to enjoy planned and unplanned socializing.
Reduced Isolation: Living in a cohousing community can help to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Living in community is great for people of all ages who would otherwise live alone, for parents who know that it takes a village to raise a secure child, and for elders who want to stay vibrant and engaged, even after they stop driving.
Shared Resources: We will be organized to share tools, appliances, vehicles, and outdoor spaces. Instead of everyone needing a McMansion's sized space and a full complement of belongings, we can reduce our "stuff" burden, while still having access to everything we need, from cars and lawnmowers to kayaks and fancy kitchen gear.
Environmental Sustainability: Cohousing makes it easier and more affordable for us to implement meaningful "green" practices. Smaller living units are more energy efficient, and shared infrastructure (like renewable energy, composting, and gardens) makes for a more powerful way to live our values and reduce our negative impact.
Choice in Lifestyle: WE design and manage OUR community. This process allows us to build a way of life that meets our deeply held values, needs, and visions. Join the community early in the development process to make sure that it aligns with how you want to live and design your dream lifestyle.
Enrichment: Living with others creates opportunities to hold classes and activities of all kinds. We can sing, dance, and make art together, invite speakers, hold book groups, enjoy movie nights, go on outings, or whatever we want to do. All without getting in the car.
Empowerment: Together, we make an impact. By speaking as a group, we can advocate for the things we want to see in our larger neighborhoods, towns, and regions. If you haven't gotten involved because you feel like your voice won't be heard, think about the sound waves 20-50 voices combined can make. Cohousing empowers residents to speak up for issues that matter and see positive change happen in our part of the world.
